The Sycamore Bowl

Carved from windfall English Sycamore, it is a statement piece both in its size and form being both sculptural and functional.

The wood was saved from river bank in 2014 in Lancashire after a flood in the village of Croston.

The wood was stabilised for 2 years before I began carving the bowl. As with all my work in natural form, my aim is to explore the wood and see what is released.

I do not aim to have a fixed design in my mind but allow for the piece to take shape during the carving.

This is a very large bowl but due to it delicate lines does not feel oversized when viewed. The hole was a natural form within the tree and allowed me to show how added space can lighten a sculpture. Taking away the feeling of weight adding another point to explore both our eyes and hands.

Finished with 4 coats of (food safe) Tung Oil
